TWO men were rescued from the River Torridge in an early morning drama at Bideford today (Thursday).They were seen jumping off the old bridge near the Quay at 12.45am by a man and woman who threw a life ring into the water and tried unsuccessfully to talk them back onto dry land.Woman PC Jeanne Hellyer swam out to one of the men who was lying face down in the water and pulled him to the bank where she was helped by fire fighters to drag him from the river.The two casualties, aged 40 and 18, were taken to North Devon District Hospital. An officer performed cardio pulmonary resuscitation on the 40-year-old, who was transferred to the intensive care unit.The 40-year-old man is from Bideford and the 18-year-old from Ilfracombe.The drama took place at high tide. Police would like to speak to the man and woman who tried to rescue the men with the life belt. They are asked to call the police on 08452 777444, quoting log number 36 190209.The next of kin of the casualties are aware of their condition.
