The owners of the Marisco at Woolacombe have launched a crowdfunding campaign appealing for help to see it continue past its 50th anniversary year.

Tommy Deaves and his partner Jenny Beardshall say the nightspot needs vital restoration work, but there is no chance of that happening without help from the community.

"We want to maintain the club's legacy and bring it into the 21st century, without losing the memories or the magic of the place," said manager Jenny.

"We know people whose grandparents first met on the Marisco dancefloor, so we understand how special the club is, and why it's worth saving."

The campaign seeks to raise £20,000 for restoration work, which will include new air-conditioning and bathrooms.

The new owners took over the club last summer and on their crowdfunding page say the short season and a barrage of bills had made it a tough year.

The club opened in 1967 and is said to be Britain's longest-running discothèque.

"It's amazing to think how many people over the years have had the night of their lives in this club," said Tommy.

"If the Marisco walls could talk you'd hear some crazy stories - although you might not be able to print a few of them!

"We know how lucky we are to be a part of the club's history, and want to make sure the Marisco Disco keeps rocking for the next 50 years."

People who pledge to the crowdfunding campaign will receive incentives such as free VIP tickets, DJ lessons and limited edition t-shirts. A £10 pledge will get two VIP 'queue jump' tickets to any of the summer events.

Coming up in 2017, the club opens its season this Saturday night (April 8) with new resident DJs new resident DJs Carva T, Lee Kay, Paul Barrington, EZ PZ, Tommy Deaves and hosted by Joe Burn.

The Amazing Slamboree Soundsystem visits on April 29 and on May 6 Finnish DJ Rico Tubbs will be in the house.
