POLICE have arrested a 30-year-old local man who was caught breaking into the offices of a Barnstaple car hire firm early on Saturday morning.

The suspect is alleged to have used a pick axe and an iron bar to smash his way through a glass door at the branch of Enterprise Rent-a-car on Old Station Road, at around 1.24am.

According to staff at the branch, he smashed the alarm system and ransacked the office before hacking into a safe containing around 75.

A dog walker is believed to have alerted police, who arrested the intruder as he fled the building. The man had been bailed to return to Barnstaple Police Station yesterday (Monday) but failed to answer the bail.
