Barnstaple man comes forward after CCTV footage - and has not been arrested by police.

A man has been identified after police released his image in connection with an attempted robbery at a jewellers’ shop in Barnstaple last month.

Police released an image of the man they wanted to eliminate from enquiries, and following the public appeal he made contact.

The man has not been arrested.

A police spokesman said: “Officers would like to thank the public for their assistance with the appeal.”

A masked raider entered the shop on May 28 at around 3.35pm and despite firing a gun twice, was chased from the scene by the shop owner.

It is thought the suspect, who was wearing a full head mask, was injured as the shop owner defended his store with a baseball bat.

The suspect made off in the direction of Green Lanes.

Police resources including a police dog unit and armed officers undertook a search of the area but the suspect was not located.
