UPDATE: 57-year-old man from Bideford dies after lorry carrying logs overturns on A39 today (Wednesday).
A man has died following a serious collision on the A39 in Bideford this morning.
A lorry carrying logs overturned at around 6.50am today (Wednesday) when travelling towards Barnstaple, two miles outside of Bideford.
A 57-year-old man from Bideford driving a Subaru Impreza was treated at the scene and was taken to North Devon District Hospital where he later died.
It is understood the driver was cut from the car by fire crews from Bideford and Barnstaple.
The driver of the red Volvo lorry, registered to Bideford, and a man driving a BMW were also treated at the scene for minor injuries.
Serious collision investigators are currently carrying out an investigation into the cause of the collision.
The road is closed between Westleigh and Roundswell, and is expected to remain closed for most of the day. Diversions are in place.
Traffic problems are expected in the area as a result and officers are assisting highways with traffic management.
Several bus routes have also been delayed by the diversion.
Helen Scholes, marketing manager for Stagecoach South West, said: “We’ve just been informed by Devon Highways that they are suspending the road closure on the B3232 at Newton Tracey to try and ease congestion.
“This means for the remainder of the day our 85, 85C, 319 and 5B services will return to running their normal routes.
“With regards to the 21 North Devon Wave service we are currently maintaining a frequency of approx 20 minutes rather than trying to operate to the the time-table until we recover from the rush hour.
“We will continue to update you as we receive more information.”
