Fire crews rescued a man and a woman from a second floor flat at the corner of Fore and Potacre streets just after midnight on Tuesday.

No one was injured as a result of the fire. It initially feared two other people had been in a first floor flat, but they were later discovered safe and well elsewhere.

Police later arrested the suspect on suspicion of arson and assault. He has been bailed to return to Barnstaple Police Station on December 16.
