SPELLING is becoming a fun activity at Great Torrington School thanks to a competition that offers sweet rewards.English teacher and literacy co-ordinator Charis Moore has involved the whole school in the competition, built round different rules for each month. The rules are studied in English classes and brought into other lessons. Each month pupils are judged by a spelling focus group of representatives from each year group. The winning year groups receive certificates - and large tins of chocolates. There are also opportunities for individual honours with plans for a 'spelling bee' with certificates and book tokens as prizes. There are prizes for teachers, too, judged on a survey of how they are introducing the spelling rules into their different classes."The aim is to inject some fun into spelling," said Miss Moore.
