SIR - The letter from Ricky Knight, the Green Party European Union candidate, regarding MEPs' expenses, shows once again why the use of percentages in isolation is used so often by politicians. While it is true that the Open Europe Survey did indeed show that 100 per cent of the Green Party MEPs had responded, thins amounts to only TWO MEPs, whereas the UK's 78-member representation for other main parties is: Con 27, Lab 19, Lib-Dem 12, UKIP 11.I am sure that even Mr Knight and his "holier than thou" Greens will accept that it's easier to control two than it is 27.I do, however, agree with him that Giles Chichester, the Conservative MEP, should resign. But then I think that all 78 UK MEPs should resign! When the first UKIP MEPs were elected in 1999, on of the first things they attempted to do was to bring in an expenses system which required receipts to be obtained for all expenses incurred.Virtually all of the more than 650 MEPs in the chamber howled them down. They described them as "coming from another planet; they were obviously very new and didn't know what they were there for." What is interesting is that, while Ricky Knight acknowledges the EU's reputation for wastefulness, extravagance and corruption, he is very keen to get elected to this non-accountable political construction and to assist in the squandering of taxpayers' money.UKIP is the only party which campaigns for a return to the original European co-operation and Common Market concept for Britain and the making redundant of all the British MEPs, including themselves, thus re-instating effective government from Westminster.David L Johnson, Appledore.
