North Devon magistrate Ian Kingsbury has sat at North Devon Magistrates for more than 10 of his nearly 30-year career.

A familiar face behind the bench at North Devon Magistrates’ Court has retired.

Ian Kingsbury has stepped down after 27 years as a magistrate.

He began his career on the Okehampton bench, before moving to Tavistock.

But when those courts were closed he moved to Barnstaple’s courtroom, around 12 years ago.

Mr Kingsbury sat his last session on Friday and paid an emotional farewell to court staff, probation services and solicitors after court closed.

He told the Gazette: “I’ve had some very happy memories here, and of course there have been sad cases too.

“I always felt fully supported by the court staff here and we have been very lucky to have them.”

Mr Kingsbury is looking forward to spending his retirement carrying out his work as grand provincial master of the Devon Freemasons.
