Lundy’s undersea secrets

Lundy’s protected underwater ‘No Take Zone’ is among the secrets of the Devon coast being revealed in a new BBC documentary.

The four-part BBC2 series ‘Britain’s Secret Seas’ starts on May 8 at 8pm, with an episode entitled ‘Giants of the West’. It follows a team of experts as they go on diving expeditions to explore the world of enormous sea creatures and vessels in and on Britain’s Western seas.

On Lundy, maritime journalist Frank Pope assesses whether its protected underwater ‘No Take Zone’ could be used as a template to establish a nationwide network of marine nature reserves around Britain.

The British Sub-Aqua Club says the new series, which will feature the Devon coast and bring the wonders and diversity of British seas to life, will inspire even more people in the county to try scuba diving.

Among more than 20 dive clubs throughout Devon are those in Ilfracombe and Bideford.
