This lucky turkey, nicknamed ‘Mr T’, was saved from Hatherleigh Market and managed to escape the dinner plate.

One lucky turkey managed to escape the dinner plate this Christmas thanks to a lady from Bideford.

'Mr T', as he has been nicknamed, was rescued from Hatherleigh Market by Helen Sheard on Tuesday.

Diana Lewis, of North Devon Animal Ambulance, said Mr T was 'too old and tough' to be sold for eating.

She said: "He was rescued and brought in to us with an ear infection.

"He has been strutting his stuff around the rescue centre and making all the staff laugh.

"This really is one very lucky turkey."

Mr T will be cared for by the charity until he is better, and will then go and live with his rescuer.

But Diana said the charity was asking for name suggestions from children.

"Mr T needs a proper name and if any children would like to send their suggestions, we'd love that," she said.

The winner will receive a special trip around the special care rescue centre and a treat for their own pet.
