Three North Devon RNLI lifeguards have been formally commended for their actions after carrying out a complex rescue.
On August 24 2025, RNLI lifeguards Beau Betteridge, Charlie Greenway, and Will Gale responded to a critical incident on Croyde beach involving a baby experiencing a seizure in the water.
The lifeguards began resuscitation efforts, conducting chest compressions until the baby showed signs of life.
The team provided continuous care until air and land ambulance crews arrived to take over, with the Croyde Coastguard Rescue Team also on hand to assist with the incident.
Two other RNLI lifeguards will receive personal letters of thanks after attending to a second major first aid incident in the lifeguard facility, also involving a child.
RNLI leadership praised the team’s coordinated response, highlighting the skill, communication, and professionalism displayed during the rescue efforts that beachgoers can expect during the new season.
Lead lifeguard supervisor Matt Whitley said: “This commendation recognises not only the lifesaving actions of Beau, Charlie, and Will, but the collective strength of the entire RNLI lifeguard team on Croyde beach.
“Their ability to manage two major incidents at once, while keeping the beach safe, is a testament to their dedication and skill. It’s exactly the kind of scenario that shows the value of our lifeguards as we head into a new season.”
The RNLI lifeguard service at Croyde and Woolacombe officially begins today (April 3) with daily patrols in place throughout the Easter school holidays until Sunday April 19. Lifeguards will operate on weekends only until May 2, when a seven-day service resumes between 10 am and 6 pm.
RNLI lifeguards will provide safety advice throughout the season while monitoring changing tides and surf conditions. Anyone planning a coastal visit is encouraged to choose a lifeguarded beach and swim between the red and yellow flags.
