Bideford College has been ranked second in Devon for student A Level progress, according to new data released by the Department for Education (DfE).
The college, which is part of the Athena Learning Trust, received an above-average progress score of 0.33.
The figure shows how much progress students made between the end of Year 11 and the end of their A Level studies, compared with students with similar starting points across England.
The DfE calculates scores by comparing students’ A Level results with those of peers nationally who had similar GCSE results.
The new data was released this month following the ratification of A Level marks from Summer 2025.
The Ilfracombe Academy, another school within the Athena Learning Trust, also ranked among the county’s top five.
Last summer, the school achieved its highest percentage of A*/A grades in recent history, with top grades accounting for around one third of all results.
Staff of Bideford College Sixth Form told the Gazette they support students throughout their studies, helping them make important decisions about their futures.
Furthermore, teachers work to ensure each student is recognised as an individual, with high expectations, strong wellbeing support, and open communication forming the foundation of the Sixth Form experience.
Bideford College’s most recent A Level and BTEC results were strong, with over 40 per cent of grades awarded at A*/A or Distinction*/Distinction. Many students have secured places at leading universities and on prestigious apprenticeship programmes.
Dr Claire Ankers, Principal at Bideford College and Atlantic Academy, said: "We are absolutely delighted to see Bideford College ranked second in Devon for A Level progress. This recognition reflects the commitment of our staff, the determination of our students and the strength of the support we provide throughout their Sixth Form journey. It also highlights how brilliantly our parents have supported their children and how much difference their encouragement regarding regular attendance, completion of homework and maintaining a positive attitude makes.
“An above average progress score demonstrates the real difference our teachers make, ensuring that every student, regardless of their starting point, is challenged, supported and inspired to achieve their very best. We are equally proud to see The Ilfracombe Academy among the top performers in the county, highlighting the collective impact of Athena Learning Trust.
“Most importantly, these results represent young people progressing confidently to university, apprenticeships and exciting future pathways. That is what truly matters to us."
