The M5 in Devon is closed southbound between junction 28 at Cullompton and junction 29 for Exeter following a single-vehicle collision.

The incident happened shortly before 7pm.

Devon and Cornwall Police and the South West Ambulance Service attended the scene. Police remain in attendance, while the ambulance service has since left.

It is understood the vehicle involved struck the central reservation barrier.

National Highways said area team crews will be required to attend to assess the barrier and carriageway.

Recovery of the vehicle is under way. However, the carriageway cannot reopen until floodwater has been cleared and safety checks have been completed.

National Highways traffic officers are managing the incident and motorists are being warned to expect delays.

Diversion in place

Southbound drivers are advised to follow the solid triangle diversion signs:

Exit the M5 at junction 28 and turn right at the traffic lights to join the A373.
At the roundabout, continue straight ahead onto the B3181 (Station Road).
Follow the B3181 through Cullompton, Westcott, Budlake and Broadclyst.
At the junction with Cumberland Way, continue southbound.
At the next roundabout, continue straight onto Moor Lane.
Rejoin the M5 at junction 30.
Drivers are advised to allow extra time for their journeys and check for the latest travel updates.
