The carnival on a previous year
Organisers of the Barnstaple Carnival have been forced to cancel this year’s procession and fireworks display because of poor weather conditions.
The long-running event, which has been a fixture in the town’s calendar for the past 50 years, was due to take place on Saturday evening (September 20)
A fireworks display had also been planned.
In a statement posted on Facebook, the carnival committee said it was “hugely disappointed” to make the decision and described being “gutted” for participants who had spent weeks preparing floats and costumes.
“Sadly the weather was not on our side today,” organisers said.
The cancellation will come as a blow to local residents and businesses, with the carnival traditionally attracting large crowds into Barnstaple town centre.
Organisers also confirmed that both the procession and the fireworks would not go ahead.
