UPDATED: A39 Atlantic Highway is closed and blocked both ways after car overturns

Police have currently closed the A39 near Higher Clovelly

The A39 Atlantic Highway is closed this afternoon (Wednesday, July 23) after a car overturned, with the incident still ongoing.

Police said they were called to the area near Higher Clovelly at around 3.45pm following a report of a car on its roof.

A police statement said: “The driver was able to get out but it is unknown at this time whether they have suffered any significant injury.

“A road closure is being put in place. The incident is ongoing.”

Traffic watch site Inrix reports both the incident happened on the eastbound side near the Woolsery turn off.

A later update said the incident was ‘between the Woolfardisworthy (Woolsery) turn off (Higher Clovelly) and Hartland turning (Baxworthy)’.

Updated 24/07: Police said today the man driving the car was taken to hospital. He sustained injuries which were not treated as life-changing or life-threatening.

The road was closed until 9.15pm.
