Torridge District Council is appealing to the community to help find a new owner for Dobby, a nine-month-old border collie abandoned in Great Torrington.

He was discovered on Friday, 6 December, and with local rehoming charities at capacity, the council hopes to place him in a home where he can thrive.

Caretakers describe Dobby as energetic, eager to please, and a fast learner.

In a short time, his recall has significantly improved, and he is mastering commands like sit and wait while learning not to jump.

Initially fearful and reactive toward other dogs, Dobby is showing promising progress in becoming less anxious.

Due to the unknown nature of Dobby’s past, a specific home is required to meet his needs. Potential adopters must:

  • Have no other pets or children at home.
  • Possess experience with rescue dogs or border collies, as the breed requires significant mental and physical stimulation.
  • Walk Dobby on a lead unless in a secure, dog-free area.
  • Be prepared to dedicate time to building trust, reassuring him in new environments, and toilet training.
  • Reside in Torridge District or a neighbouring area, as a home inspection will be conducted by the Environmental Protection Team.

The kennels’ staff have grown fond of Dobby, describing him as a loving companion for the right owner. While he will be well cared for over Christmas, the team will review applications to find his forever home in the new year.

If you believe you can offer Dobby the home he deserves, contact the council at environmental.protection@torridge.gov.uk.
