Are you planning to tidy up the garden this Bank Holiday Weekend - Credit: TDC
Many residents will be taking advantage of the Bank Holiday Weekend and heading into their gardens to tidy-up and get ready for the summer season. But what to do with all your garden waste?
On average, 388 tonnes of garden waste are collected each month through Torridge District Council’s green waste collection service, which equates to roughly 27,000 ‘car boot’ journeys to the recycling centre!
If you’re regularly taking your green waste to the recycling centre, you might want to consider saving time and potentially money, by arranging for it to be collected from your doorstep. Torridge District Council offers a fortnightly garden waste collection service, which runs from 1 June – 31 May and costs £55 for the year. The service also includes a Torridge District Council 240l green wheelie bin.
Once collected all green waste is deposited at Deepmoor, near Torrington, where it is carefully shredded, composted, and processed. The final compost product, which is mainly used for agricultural purposes, contains beneficial fungi and microbes crucial for healthy soils, reducing the need for fertilisers and pesticides.
Councillor Chris Leather, Lead member for Operational Services, said: “Whether you’re a serious gardener or just like to make sure everything is tidy so you can enjoy a BBQ with friends, the garden waste collection service is an affordable and reliable way to ensure that you’re garden green waste is disposed of correctly. For just over £4.50 per month, your waste can be collected from your doorstep, saving valuable time and effort on a visit to the local recycling centre.
“For those residents who are interested in composting at home, Torridge District Council is working in partnership with www.getcomposting.com who can supply a range of low-cost home composters.”
