Appledore shipyard is getting ready to take in its next round of applications for apprenticeships, it has been announced.

Yard owner Harland & Wolff has said its 2024 intake for apprentices is now open and young people are being invited to apply as part of its growth plans for the future.

The website for the international shipbuilding and marine engineering business says it currently has vacancies for the roles of mechanical engineer (pipe fitter), welder and fabricator.

It says it is setting its sights on a ‘record intake of apprentices’ over the next 12 months to support ambitious growth and diversification plans across the maritime sectors in which it operates, which include commercial, defence and renewables.

It wants to boost the numbers of its apprentices across its four sites, including Appledore as well as in Arnish (West Scotland), Belfast (Northern Ireland) and Methil (East Scotland).

Harland & Wolff says the variety of opportunities on offer will provide apprentices with a wide range of transferable skills to navigate the ever-changing maritime industry.

Those joining the scheme could have the opportunity to work on the next generation of ships the company is helping builds for the Royal Navy, through to working on green sources of energy such as offshore wind turbine foundations.

They would get the support of skilled tradespeople, who will share their knowledge and skills with future generations of maritime professionals.

Harland & Wolff director of talent, David Honeyman, said: “It’s never been a more exciting time to consider a shipbuilding and engineering apprenticeship with Harland & Wolff.

“Whether you’re a school or college leaver, our apprenticeships ensure your career gets off to the best possible start. You’ll work alongside and be mentored by experienced colleagues and be encouraged to share your ideas and fresh perspectives.

“We’ve set course to not only build the finest vessels, but to build a diverse, equitable and inclusive skilled workforce able deliver high standards of performance through trust, creativity and teamwork.”
