As reported by The Telegraph, both independent and grammar schools have seen a record drop in top GCSE grades.

Despite the reversion to a more stringent grading system, West Buckland School has showcased remarkable consistency, with grades 9 to 7 aligning closely with those of preceding years. Particularly noteworthy is that nearly half of the conferred grades lie within the 9 to 7 range.

Head, Phillip Stapleton, said: "I acknowledge the demanding effort required to achieve top grades in numerous subjects, and I am delighted for the students and staff who are enjoying their results today. While most students take 9 subjects, some undertake additional examinations.

"I congratulate everyone on their individual accomplishments, with special mention for the nineteen students who secured seven or more top grades (7-9), as well as the twenty students who excelled in their second language. Importantly, this year's cohort comprises adventurous and inspiring young individuals who have embraced the diverse range of opportunities available and have contributed wholeheartedly to the broader educational program of the school.

"It is particularly gratifying to witness West Buckland students performing exceptionally well across a variety of subjects, from History to Mathematics, Music to Modern Foreign Languages. The sustained efforts over the past two years have yielded exceptional results that will prepare them for the next stage of their education. We're excited for the return of most students next week, along with nearly 30 new students, as they continue their studies at West Buckland."

These results affirm that students at West Buckland thrive within a supportive environment that encompasses a comprehensive and well-rounded curriculum. A notable range of departments have achieved exceptional performance, with over 50% attaining grades 9-7. Prominent subjects such as Mathematics, Physics, Art, Music, Drama, Religious and Philosophical Education (RPE), History, Geography and Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) have all showcased outstanding outcomes.

Many of those achieving a full set of top grades have done so while pursuing a demanding and impressive sporting, musical, or theatrical extra-curricular programme. Fatima A stands out with her 10 top grades while Jude W was recognised by OCR as one of the highest performers in their GCSE Art and Design: Fine Art course this year.

Mia B, achieved a Grade 9 in both French and Spanish. What makes this achievement even more noteworthy is that Mia undertook these exams an entire year ahead of schedule.

Mia said: "I was really nervous before I got my results, but then I opened them and was so excited!"

Assistant head of Middle School, Katie Hill, extends her congratulations to all students for their achievements over their time at school: “At WBS, we go beyond education. We offer personalised guidance, which enables many students to achieve exceptional results and promising futures. We are extremely proud of this cohort and all their outstanding achievements.”
