Seaside Awards given to North Devon resorts.

THREE North Devon beaches have been given the seal of approval by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy.

Combe Martin, Croyde and Westward Ho! were among 113 English beaches to be given a Seaside Award, formerly known as the Quality Coast Award, in recognition of their facilities and cleanliness.

As reported last week, Westward Ho! was also awarded a tenth consecutive Blue Flag for meeting the highest international standard of water quality. Only 55 Blue Flags were awarded around the country.

Combe Martin Parish Councillor Trevor Kibble, also a member of the Bathing Water Quality Standard Group, said two years of hard work by the group was starting to show results.

“The first two tests undertaken for bathing water quality have already been taken during May and again we have passed at the highest standard,” he said.

“To maintain this standard we must ensure that the River Umber and Rosea Stream are kept clean and free from rubbish and dog mess, this also applies to our streets as everything flows down to the sea and beach.

“We intend to keep the pressure on all concerned to ensure that Combe Martin has one of the safest bathing waters in the South West for its residents and visitors alike.”
