One of Barnstaples LloydsPharmacy stores is to close as part of a wave of planned branch closures nationwide. Celesio UK confirmed the Eastern Avenue store next to Barnstaples Rose Lane Tesco is in the process of closing. The closure is one of 190 planned closures across England, with Celesio UK citing NHS England cuts to reimbursement police and increases in retrospective clawbacks. The company was unable to confirm if North Devon will be affected by any further closures. A spokesman for Celesio UK said: We can confirm that we are in the process of closing our store on Eastern Avenue in Barnstaple. This is an ongoing process, therefore its too early to give any further details. What we can say, is that both the employees of the stores and the local communities are cared for as a priority. We do have alternative LloydsPharmacy stores in the area, including one in Litchdon Medical Centre on Landkey Road. We are committed to providing the same levels of service to our customers and patients in the community. County and district councillor John Matthews, said he thought the closure would have a devastating effect on those in the area. He added: There are about 3,000 people in the Forches, Whiddon Valley and Newport area. I think it will have a devastating effect on residents, especially the elderly who really rely on that particular chemist for supplies.
