BRITANNIA was feeling a little low - all dressed up for the opening day of Ilfracombe Victorian Celebrations on Saturday, June 7 and no traditional lion to accompany her.Fortunately, two local Lions' Clubs, aghast at the thought of the British figurehead without her mascot, managed to find her a stand-in to sit beside her in the opening parade on the Saturday afternoon.Ilfracombe Lions' president Brian Roberts got on the 'phone to Andy Shiner of the Barnstaple club, who managed to drag their own mascot out of semi-retirement.Dressmaker Lin Harper of the Victorian committee soon brushed him back into parade form and said:"Thank you very much top both Lions' clubs for the lion of the magnificent lion, which will play a leading part in our parade."The activity-packed celebrations run from June 7-15, with programmes available at outlets around the town. The event is part of the North Devon Festival strand sponsored by the Gazette.
