NORTH Devon Hospice are seeking dedicated danglers for a fundraising event that requires nerves of steel and a head for heights.
The Great Devon Dangle takes place on the cliffs of Hartland and offers people the chance to abseil down either 80ft or 180ft of sheer rock face in one of the most beautiful and dramatic settings you could wish for.
One woman who knows all about the dangle, as well as the significance of such events, is hospice nurse, Annie Hogg. As a Clinical Nurse Specialist, Annie visits patients and families in their own homes, providing care and support where it is most needed. In 2008, she also took on the challenge of the Great Devon Dangle. "I don't mind admitting that I was very nervous at the top of the cliff!" she said. "But once I got going, I really enjoyed it and the guys from Skern Lodge made me feel very relaxed and confident."
Annie added, "Fundraising events like this are vital for North Devon Hospice, because without them we wouldn't be able to offer our specialist services. I did the Great Devon Dangle because I wanted to do something challenging whilst supporting the hospice at the same time, and I would recommend it to anyone else. Everyday I see the difference that hospice care makes to people's lives. So by taking part in this abseil, you will be helping families in your own town or village, maybe in your own street."
Gerard Fawcitt, from North Devon Hospice's fund-raising team, said that the Great Devon Dangle was an event than would appeal to anyone who was up for a challenge.
"We have had a whole range of ages take part before, from 16-year-olds to people in their late seventies, so, this really is an event for anyone," he said. w
"However, places are limited, so make sure you get in touch right now to book your spot. Don't 'hang around'!"
The money raised at the Great Devon Dangle will go towards the essential care provided by North Devon Hospice.
The event will again be supported by the expert team from Skern Lodge. Danglers can either choose the 80ft decent or more challenging 180ft drop. For more information, contact the fund-raising team for an application form on 01271 347224 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
