Elite runners leader a huge field at second annual endurance road race.

More than a thousand runners took part in the Barnstaple Marathon and Half Marathon today (Sunday).

The course started and finished at Rock Park and took competitors along the Tarka Trail to Fremington and Yelland and RMB Chivenor.

Elite Kenyan runners Nicholas Koech and Timon Cheruiyot were first across the finish line – Cheruiyot with a time of 2hrs 38mins 41secs and Baronjo clocking in at 2hrs 40mins 28secs.

The runners, who arrived in the UK earlier this week, had hoped to land professional contracts by finishing under 2hrs 12mins.

The women’s race was won by Serane Stone, of Tiverton Harriers, in 3hrs 6mins 52secs.

The half marathon was won by Luke Delderfield with a time of in 1hr 13mins 58secs.

The ladies winner was Bideford AAC runner Sammy Antell, who finished in 1hr 27mins 53secs.
