Purple Paddle: Intrepid team raises some £8,500 for cancer charities.

A group of friends from Hartland have kayaked from the North Devon coast to Lundy Island to raise an impressive £8,500, divided between the Chemo Appeal and Cancer Research.

Nick Bell, Paul Meaker, Lucy Goaman, Robin Allin, Tim and Kerris Lockwood all started out as total sea kayak novices, but hours of training paid off and this summer they set forth from Lee Bay for the 22 miles paddle to the island.

The crossing was tackled from both directions – the first party arrived at the island and waited for the second group to arrive on the Oldenburg. Paul declared he was not a fan of boats and would paddle back the way he came!

Although sea conditions and the weather were good for the trip, both groups had to battle strong tides and building swells as they left and returned to the North Devon shore.

“I will never forget the euphoric feeling of pride and achievement when we reached the island, and the happy tears that followed,” said Lucy.

The team would like to thank supporters for their ‘amazing’ generosity. Staff and passengers of the Oldenburg donating more than £75 in loose change on the day. Instow-based Letterfest, donating five per cent of a monthly net profit to the cause.
