NORTH Devon magistrates and court staff will be hosting a mini 'roadshow' at the Atlantic Village outlet shopping centre at Bideford on Thursday, February 19, between 10am and 6pm. There will be information about the work of the courts and what is involved being a magistrate and also giveaways and interactive activities for children on their half-term break. The purpose of the 'roadshow' is to increase awareness and understanding about the Courts Service and the role of magistrates and to encourage a better interaction between local communities and the courts.Paul Cooper JP, chair of the North Devon bench of magistrates, said: "We know that many people don't always understand the sentencing process and how the courts work, so we wanted to get out and meet the public to listen to their views and give them the chance to ask us any questions they may have. We hope, by regularly doing things like this, people in North Devon will learn more about what we do and have a better understanding of sentencing decisions and we'll be more aware of the views of local people."There are plans to host similar 'roadshows' at other venues across North Devon in the coming months. North Devon magistrates also attend local neighbourhood police surgeries every month at South Molton pannier market along with local town councillors.
