THE unique Combe Martin tradition of the Hunting of the Earl of Rone takes to the streets in a series of parades this bank holiday weekend.Costumed characters, including the Hobby Horse, Fool, "grenadiers" and hapless "Earl" himself, plus musicians and flower-bedecked villagers will all be taking part in a ceremony whose origins are rapidly becoming lost in the mists of time.Not to be missed is the spectacle of the main parade on Monday evening.Anyone in the village or surrounding parishes can take part, starting with the hunt setting off from Holdstone Way at the top of the village on Friday, from 7.15pm.On Saturday the Junior Party aged 14 or under, which leaves the primary school at 11am. There is a social evening later at 8pm in the Stable Bar of the Castle Inn, with all welcome.On Sunday the hunt makes a winding tour around the byways and back lanes of the village from 1.30pm and then on Monday evening the main procession will set off form the top of the village around 6.15pm, reaching the seaside at sunset when the "Earl" is ceremoniously "cast" into the sea.
