THE Rotary Club of Barnstaple have awarded its "Citizen of the Year" award for 2010 to Ivor Bourne.

Bob Domleo who introduced him said" Since he gave up his farming business in Beaford, he has for over 20 years lived in Chittlehampton and throughout that time has devoted himself to charitable works in the Chittlehampton and Umberleigh area.

"He has maintained the churchyard and helped innumerable villagers with their gardens without seeking reward. Throughout these years he has given generously of his resources to help the community in which he has made his home.

His efforts over this period have been right in line with the Rotary motto, 'Service above Self' and it is fitting that they have, at last, been formally recognised with a Rotary award, which is so richly deserved.
