Holiday home has seen 42 proposals and 186 honeymoons...

Is Rose Cottage at High Bickington the most romantic holiday home in the UK?

In less than four years the luxury retreat has been the scene of 42 proposals of marriage and the location for 186 honeymoons.

The five star love nest is owned by Kate and Bob Boothby, who have been keeping track of the proposals by chatting to guests and tallying up the entries in the visitors’ book.

“We’ve had lots of holiday cottages and we have never had as many proposals as here,” said Kate.

Bob added: “The focus is as a honeymoon cottage and I think about 50-60 per cent of our guests are honeymooners.

“I think it has a total mixture of boyish toys and shabby chic romance.”

The ‘toys’ include a state-of-the-art entertainment system and surround sound throughout the house, but Rose Cottage really wins on its romantic touches.

There is a copper bath tub big enough for two plus a hot tub in the back yard and everywhere is that little touch or detail that adds to the ambience of romance.

Guests can book romantic treats on arrival and it seems the whole community buys in.

Bob said: “A couple staying at the cottage were chatting in the Old George Inn opposite and said they were getting married on Saturday and planned to spend a lazy day in bed on Sunday.

“So the landlord took them a Sunday roast around so they didn’t even need to get out of their pyjamas.”
