SIR - "Hope Yet For College" was one headline in last week's Gazette. There has been much recent lamentation and political posturing about the demise of the relocation of North Devon College to Seven Brethren. Carefully selected shots of college dilapidation have been shown on television which bear no relation to the overall condition of the college and claims have been made about the dire consequences for North Devon. How fortunate that they can heap all the blame on the Learning and Skills Council, but what inconvenient truths do they leave out of the story? No mention, for instance, has been made about the need for a multi-million self-funding contribution by the college. Sale of the existing site was always an integral part of the scheme and there is no realistic expectation that they can raise the required funding until the economy recovers. We have also yet to hear what demands will be made by the Environment Agency before they will permit this development on the Seven Brethren floodplain and whether the scheme is still viable. The college and local authority can probably count themselves lucky that the Learning and Skills Council have taken all the flak. It would have been a total embarrassment if the funding had been or still is available and the project had then failed for one or both of the other factors. Tony Martin.
