PUPILS at Orchard Vale Primary School in Barnstaple, have been learning about the importance of being careful when playing near water. The event was organised by local Police Community Safety Officer (PCSO) Hannah Denton, and saw children meeting members of Devon Fire & Rescue, Exmoor Search and Rescue and paramedics, as well as the police.Hannah said: "Last year I held a 'Safety Net Initiative' at the school to increase awareness of the problems of under-age drinking and it was a great success with the pupils and different agencies that attended."Building on this approach, I wanted to highlight awareness of water in general, not just rivers, following a couple of incidents last year when young people got into difficulties swimming in the South West.""It helps them to understand why it is so important to act safely around water and how the various agencies work together in an emergency."PerceptiveAs part of the exercise, the pupils posed as reporters writing about a fictional accident near a stretch of water. The students then got the opportunity to quiz the emergency services about what to do in the event of a drowning."They have been very perceptive," added Hannah. "They love joining in and doing the more practical side of things, which also raises questions they might not think of in the classroom and helps them to remember more."Following the session the students then finished off the day writing up the piece in the classroom, and presenting it as a news story.
