GREEN-CLAD lads, lasses and all manner of characters took to the streets of Ilfracombe on Monday to greet the return of summer.The ninth instalment of the annual May Day Celebrations ran true to form as the sun shone to accompany the dancers, drummers and revellers of all ages who made their way along the High Street to the seafront.They accompanied Jack-in-the-Green, often called the Spirit of Summer to the seaside maypole where youngsters from the town's junior and infant schools performed the traditional maypole dances. Later in he afternoon "Jack" was escorted to the pier and stripped off his leafy covering to ensure summer was properly released.
