AN Ilfracombe Arts College student has received a prestigious Rotary Young Leader Award.

Peter Ravenscroft was sponsored to attend a week long intensive outward bound course in Okehampton alongside other young men and women from across Devon by Ilfracombe Rotary Club.

The week, designed to build and hone the participants' leadership skills, included dinghy sailing, kayaking, survival activities, mountain biking, high ropes, orienteering, rock climbing, gorge scrambling overnight trekking and camping.

There was an all day challenge at Meldon Reservoir, were given lessons in leadership skills, a talk by an RAF pilot, and had to complete a quiz.

All the participants were then presented with their award at a ceremony in Okehampton College's Octagon Theatre by Carole Angliss, Rotary District Governor for Devon. Peter received a special award for the winning quiz team of which he was the leader.

Organiser Alan Roberton also commented to Tony Seymour, Youth Committee Chairman for Ilfracombe Rotary, that Peter was "fearless, especially on the high ropes and fully committed himself to all the tasks."

Mr Robertson said every year he was amazed at the high standards achieved by the young people, but this year the participants were outstanding and were some of the best that had taken part.

After the ceremony Peter gave a short talk on behalf of his team on what he thought they would be taking away from the week. He said he had been surprised how quickly they had all bonded and had worked well together.

The week had been "amazing, challenging and tremendous fun" and he had made a lot of new friends.
