Popular park achieves five-star rating and ranked one of the best in the South West.

Bicclescombe Park in Ilfracombe has been ranked one of the best parks in the South West.

The popular park – a Green Flag accredited park for the last 12 years – has earned a five-star rating in the Pride in Parks awards.

The accolade, awarded by Southwest in Bloom in conjunction with the Royal Horticultural Society, is given to parks and open spaces that demonstrate good community involvement, excellent maintenance and development, and care of the environment.

Bicclescombe Park User Group member Wendy Dunlop-Jenkins nominated the North Devon Council-owned park for an award.

She said: “Bicclescombe is such a beautiful park and doesn’t always get the recognition it deserves.

“I was so thrilled when I heard that the park had won, and to get the highest rank possible is absolutely brilliant.”

North Devon councillor Dick Jones, lead member for parks, leisure and culture said: “Wow! Another award for Bicclescombe Park and well deserved it is too.

“To achieve the highest marks possible by the judges just shows what a superb facility the park is and something which the council is very proud of.

“Well done to everyone involved, particularly our parks team and the very active community, who strive to keep the park to such a high standard.”

Local ward member, Cllr Geoff Fowler, added: “This is excellent news for Ilfracombe; congratulations to everyone who had an input into making our park such a success for the community.”

Fellow ward member, Cllr Ian Meadlarkin, said: “I was very pleased to hear of this award, another accolade to everyone who contributes to the well-being of the park and the hard work involved.

“I was also happy to pledge the vast majority of my community councillor grant towards the new play equipment.”
