An Ilfracombe street-drinker has been prosecuted for breaching a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO).

Hans Ellis, 52, of Coronation Terrace was fined a total of £190 for breaching the order by drinking alcohol at Ilfracombe’s Market Arches.

The case was heard at North Devon Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, July 3, although Mr Ellis did not attend the hearing.

The PSPO at the Market Arches is one of a number across North Devon. Similar orders apply to parts of Barnstaple, South Molton, Woolacombe and Croyde, with the aim of ensuring public spaces can be enjoyed free of anti-social behaviour.

North Devon Council’s executive member for community safety, Councillor Pat Barker, said: “This conviction shows that the council is serious about tackling anti-social behaviour.

“We will continue to work actively with the police to enforce the street drinking PSPO.

“We will continue to work with the police to address anti-social behaviour in problem areas, this includes taking action where necessary but also signposting vulnerable individuals to support services that are available in the district.”
