The annual Jack-in-the-Green event is all about releasing the spirit of summer and despite a heavy bank of coastal fog hanging along the shoreline, it seems to have been successful. A green-clad procession complete with giants and drummers made its way through the town to the seafront, led by town crier Roy Goodwin. At the clapping circle by Capstone children from the audience were invited to join the maypole dancing. Then they were welcomed forward to strip Jack of his greenery and ensure the spirit of summer would smile down on the town for the season. The annual event is always organised by volunteers and the procession was a good size this year, with many people joining the parade. Ilfracombe May Day is grateful to the Tubby Foundation and North Devon Councils community fund for their support.
