Richard Brettle admits causing the death of Natalie Jones in Knowle last year

An Ilfracombe man has been jailed for 12 years for causing the death of his girlfriend in a crash on the A361 at Knowle.

Richard Brettle, 31, had previously denied responsibility for the collision on August 21 last year but changed his plea at a hearing at Exeter Crown Court on Tuesday.

He admitted causing death by careless driving while under the influence of drugs, possession of cocaine with intent to supply, and possession of criminal property.

Passenger Natalie Jones died in the crash on the Braunton to Ilfracombe road, while the driver of the other car, Abigail Ashton, sustained serious injuries.

Brettle was handed eight years for the driving offence and four years for drug dealing - a total of 12 years.

North Devon Sector Inspector Roger Bartlett said: "There are no winners in this, we have three families now broken apart, with the loss of Natalie and the other party was a completely innocent victim.

"It was really excellent work from the guys who did the investigation, because it was very complex, so to see that justice has been done gives us an element of satisfaction."
