An intruder allegedly raped a young mother after walking into her home in Ilfracombe while she was having a bath.

Ross Wyborn allegedly confronted the woman on the landing outside her bathroom after she went out to investigate a noise while wearing just a towel.

He forced her to perform a sex act on him and raped her again after they were interrupted by her young daughter, Exeter Crown Court was told.

Wyborn, aged 25, allegedly pushed the crying girl forcefully back into her bedroom before resuming the sex assault, which only ended when he realised he had left the front door open and he could be seen by anyone passing.

Wyborn, of Fore Street, Ilfracombe, denies two counts of rape and assault by penetration, and assault by battery of the child.

He denies being the intruder but claims he paid for sex with the complainant on a different occasion.

Piers Norsworthy, prosecuting, said the 25-year-old mother was in the bath at her home in Ilfracombe at around midnight on May 21, 2019, when she heard a noise from downstairs.

At first she thought it was her cat coming or going through a window but then she heard more noise and got out of the bath to investigate, holding a towel in front of her.

She was confronted by a man outside the room who stared at her and said nothing at first and did not reply when she asked who he was and what he was doing there.

He grabbed her, put his hand over her mouth, and then pulled down his trousers before forcing her to give him oral sex. He then assaulted her before her daughter, who was woken by the disturbance, came out of her room.

Mr Norsworthy said: "It appeared to put the man off. The man grabbed the girl and pushed her flying back into her bedroom."

He said during the course of the assault Wyborn raped the woman again and then appeared to realise he had left the front door open. He stopped the attack and said 'don't tell anyone' before leaving.

The woman rang the police immediately and gave a full description of Wyborn, who she did not know but thought she might have seen while in a bar in the town.

She also told a friend about what happened and her description was so good that the friend spotted a picture of Wyborn on Facebook and sent it to her to ask if it was the man.

She confirmed to police that it was and he was arrested at his home. In his first interview, he denied any knowledge of the woman or her house.

In later interviews he claimed he met her at a pub and paid her to have sex near a hut, but could not remember which pub or when it happened.

The jury have been shown a video recorded police interview with the complainant in which she sobbed as she recalled what happened to her.

She said she thought Wyborn may have got in her front door using a key which she used to keep under a recycling bin.

The trial continues.
