Ilfracombe Academy is celebrating a fine crop of top grades under the new GCSE system.

Aimee Cooper achieved a stunning eight grade 9s and two grade 8s, while Tom Turner gained eight grade 9s and a grade 8 and a 6.

Among the many who performed well were Molly Gooch who got a grade 9 in English Literature, Elijah Clarke who got 9 in both English Language and Literature, and Sadhbh Gates who got two grade 9s, five grade 8s and three grade 7s.

Headteacher Sharon Marshall said: “This year we are particularly pleased with our top grades especially bearing in mind the new tougher GCSEs.

“Several other students also gained grade 9s, in some cases much to their own surprise! We are also pleased with the improvements we have made to English and maths progress and in particular the progress we have made in science.

“We are looking forward to seeing the majority of our students returning to us in the Sixth Form.”
