The entrance wall at an Ilfracombe church has been smashed to rubble after a car crashed into it.

Police said the single vehicle collided with the wall at St Philip and St James Church – known locally as ‘Pip and Jim’s – at 12.20am on Saturday morning.

The wall at St James Place was badly damaged by the collision, but police said neither of the two occupants of the car were harmed.

A 22-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of drink driving, police said.
