MUMMIES, lifeguards, robots and aliens were just some of the colourful characters who joined the annual Ilfracombe St John Ambulance Carnival parade on Thursday evening.

Organisers St John Ambulance were keen to make this year's carnival special - to mark 80 years of the charity in the town - and despite a little bracing precipitation, it proved another successful event.

There was a large entry of floats and trade vehicles, as well as the regular horde of costumed walking characters.

Alongside the carnival was the inaugural Ilfracombe Carnival Evening Criterium - a British cycling event for experienced racers.

It was also an opportunity to enjoy the last public appearance of Heart FM's Hopps and Chapple as they went out in true carnival style before their final breakfast show broadcast on Friday morning.

So far the charitable total raised by the carnival stands at £2,644 and Divisional Superintendent Sue Ayre of Ilfracombe St John Ambulance was delighted: "We were very pleased with the number of lorry entries this year and all were to a very high standard," she said.

"The cycle race was certainly a new attraction for Ilfracombe. The carnival was also well supported by people from Combe Martin and Parracombe. Plus special thanks to our chairman Graham Moger who has worked tirelessly putting it all together."
