With May bank holiday looming that can only mean one thing – Ilfracombe May Day.
The popular event is back on Sunday and will see Jack-in-the-Green plus giants, musicians and many green clad folk making their way through the town.
This year it returns to its High Street route, setting off from Wilder Road car park at 11am and making its way along Church Street, The High Street, Fore Street, Broad Street and St James Place to the clapping circle by Capstone.
Once there, members of Stagecoach Performing Arts will perform a short piece, followed by maypole dancing.
Then ‘Jack’ will be led to the beach where his greenery is stripped away to – fingers crossed – release the ‘spirit of summer’.
Unfortunately drummers Humdrumconundrum are unable to attend this year, but the parade is hoping Samba Baia will join them, plus people are invited to bring their own drums, maracas, tambourines or anything they like to add to the ‘May-hem’.
Ilfracombe May Day is grateful to the Tubby Foundation and North Devon Council’s community fund for their support.
