An ‘iconic’ shelter on the Tarka Trail at Yelland is being removed after becoming unsafe.

The wave shelter, erected in 2000, only had a design life of eight-to-10 years, which it has now exceeded.

Martin Caddy, who manages the Tarka Trail at Yelland, said: “The wave shelter represents a boat hull and the landscape and features of the North Devon Coast and has provided welcome shelter for trail users for 15 years.

“In that time wind, rain and even summer sun have taken their toll, rotting the supports and loosening the attached timbers. It has finally succumbed to the elements and its construction method makes it uneconomic to repair.

“Sadly, it must be taken down.”
