Family and friends of Barnstaple double lung transplant teenager Katie Gammon released hundreds of purple balloons in her memory this evening (Thursday). They met for a poignant ceremony by the River Taw, next to the civic centre the start point of Katies three fundraising walks in aid of cystic fibrosis and organ donation charities. As the balloons soared over the civic centre, well-wishers observed a two-minute silence in memory of Katie, who died on Sunday.Mum Angie Hart said: I knew Katie was popular but I didnt expect so many people to be here tonight. Its really special lovely to see. Katie, who underwent a double lung transplant in August 2013, died just days after her 17th birthday. Her funeral will take place at Barnstaple Parish Church, off the High Street, on Monday, September 7 at 12noon. Her burial will then take place at the Bear Street cemetery. Details about the wake are still being finalised but a statement released by the family said Katie had made her own funeral plans and had asked everyone to wear purple. Katie wanted a good party; she wanted everyone she loved or knew to be there, it said. We know how popular Katie was so our only request we have is for family flowers only. However, if you wish to make a donation that would be lovely and money raised will be split between Caroline Thorpe childrens ward and the Little Bridge House childrens hospice.
