Jenny Cowling, director of Cowlings Estate Agents in Bideford, says the housing market is showing signs of improvement. Since the start of the year there had been a lot more inquiries on properties whether by telephone or by e-mail, she said. Viewings were up and sales were being agreed. She said: "It is fair to say that there are many cash purchasers at present looking to buy property. They are people either that sold last year and went into rented accommodation and are now looking to come back into the property market again, or those buyers who have money presently invested in savings and feel nervous about it being safe. "So they are investing in property as the prices have come down in the area."There are also pensioners who, with the interest rate so low, are not able to live off the interest from savings, so are also investing in property to rent. There is a lot more confidence at present in the property market again with prices being more realistic and with some bargains out there to be bought." The rental market for investment was still very strong in the area, but again rentals needed to be realistic as there was a lot more property available."There is still a shortage of new properties coming onto the market at present, but with so many willing and able buyers out there at the present time, now is a very good time to go onto the market to sell your property," she said.
