TWO North Devon sportswomen were honoured at the Devon Sports Awards held at the Tiverton Hotel, a ceremony dedicated to sports coaches, officials and volunteers. Denise Austin was named Senior Female Coach of the Year for the countless time she devotes to developing volleyball in North Devon, using her playing experience to mentor many players and teams to achieve highly on the volleyball court. Denise works hard to recruit new players to the Academy of Beach Sport club and has worked alongside coaches and referees to help the club achieve the Clubmark status. Denise is a role model on the court and off the court spending many hours developing the coaches and players of the club. Lauren Bawden of Titans Netball team was awarded Young Coach of the Year. Lauren is a level 1 Netball Coach and a 'B' Award Umpire. She coaches the Titans U14s in the North Devon Junior Netball League, leading them to the league title in 2008 and a very respectable third in the East Devon County Tournament. Her success at this level has led to her taking sessions at senior level and passing on her coaching and officiating knowledge to young aspiring coaches.The annual Devon Sports Awards, co-ordinated by Active Devon (the County Sports Partnership) attracted more than 100 nominations of which 28 finalists were congratulated for their achievements in sport during 2008.Mark Tyler, Westcountry TV presenter and Active Devon Board Member, hosted a very successful evening paying tribute to the hundreds of individuals 'behind the scenes' around the county who devote their time to sports clubs and organisations. The trophies and certificates were presented by top trial biker Andrei Burton, who attended despite a recent injury that has prevented him from competing.
