The 1st Chivenor Scout Group has teamed up with Stagecoach South West to incorporate public buses into their programme, offering a cost-effective way to explore the local area.

With the ongoing cost-of-living challenges, leaders of local Scout groups face increasing pressure to provide engaging activities without placing financial strain on parents.

Rory Grey, an engineering manager at Stagecoach’s Barnstaple depot, who also volunteers with the Scouts and Beavers, has experienced this firsthand.

“Hiring forms of transport for the Scouts to travel can prove costly for parents and therefore limits the number of trips we can do with the group. Having worked at Stagecoach I know how great the bus network can be for days out, so recommended to the group we use an in-service bus to travel. This allows the kids to explore further afield, enriching the programme without having to pass on the expense to parents,” Mr Grey explained.

At the end of February, the group travelled on the 21C bus route from Braunton to Croyde, where they put their navigation skills to the test with a 4-mile cross-country walk.

The Scouts also had the opportunity to brush up on their astronomy skills by learning how to navigate using the stars.
