Clovelly RNLI has recently marked a series of significant milestones, including the qualification of two new helms and the retirement of a long-serving volunteer.
According to Clovelly RNLI, winter is typically a quieter period at the station, with fewer visitors and reduced activity on the water.
During this time, the crew has focused on training and refreshing their lifesaving skills in preparation for the busier months ahead.
The branch confirmed that Paul Smale and Philip De Blocq Van Kuffeler have both successfully qualified as helms.
In the RNLI, a helm is a trained volunteer responsible for taking full command of the lifeboat during rescue operations.
As qualified helms, both Paul and Philip are now authorised to lead the crew aboard Clovelly’s Atlantic 85 B class lifeboat, the Toby Rundle.
Having previously served as boat crew, both are now stepping into this next important role.
Additionally, volunteers Hannah-Jane Brown and Dave Harris have passed their Tier 1 assessments, which supports essential lifesaving skills, including anchoring, towing, mooring, berthing, and local knowledge.
Simon Cooper has also completed the final module of his training and is now cleared for active service.
During this period, Clovelly RNLI also welcomed a former crew member, helm, press officer, and launch authority, Dan Garnett, who recently retired after many years of service.

Dan began his lifesaving career with Clovelly’s independent lifeboat, the Pride of Clovelly, which served the village from 1988 to 1998.
Over the years, he has held several key roles at Clovelly RNLI, and was presented with a certificate in recognition of his dedication.
As Clovelly RNLI looks ahead to the summer season, the station’s team of fundraisers and supporters are preparing a series of events.
These include the Cobble Wobble sponsored run on May 4 and Lifeboat Day on August 3.
A new visits team has also been established to ensure the station remains open for regular tours, providing the public with an opportunity to learn about the vital work of the RNLI.
