One of North Devon’s most secluded and picturesque beaches is closed until further notice after a huge landslide wiped out the steps and path to the beach.

Broadsands between Combe Martin and Berrynarbor has long been a popular location for locals and tourists alike, known for its stunning scenery and relative isolation even in the height of the season.

But sometime over the weekend a major landslide of earth and loose rock obliterated the steps and a section of the steep twisty path leading to the beach.

It is now completely inaccessible and would be incredibly dangerous to try and scramble over the loose material, with cracks in the cliff suggesting yet more may fall at some point.

There is no other way to reach the beach unless by sea.

The beach itself is owned by Watermouth Valley Camping Park but the access path is understood to fall under the remit of Devon County Council.

Nick Wassall at the campsite said: “We are aware of the damage caused by the landslide and have notified the council who are responsible for the upkeep of the access.

“Obviously until they have assessed and carried out the work required, we would advise people to stay away from Broadsands.”

Barriers have now been placed at the top of the beach path and a Devon County Council public rights of way notice is waning people of the landslide and that the beach is closed until further notice.

The Gazette has approached Devon County Council for further comment.
